In all three cases the cleaning disk restored their drives to full function. On at least three occasions I have helped friends whose MBP optical drive had been pronounced "Dead" by a qualified Apple tech, who advised replacement. The disks are typically US$5 to $15 and are available at most home electronics stores, computer shops, and office "superstores" that sell computer accessories.
I prefer the "dry" kind to avoid geting liquid on my electronics. The first thing to try is a cleaning disk.
